Empire Union School District was founded in 1924. The district actually began serving students in this part of Stanislaus County in 1904. Currently the Empire is made up of six schools. There are five elementary sites and one middle school. Three elementary schools are located within the Modesto City Limits. Two elementary schools and one middle school are located within Stanislaus County. In addition there are three Head Start and one Early Head Start programs throughout the district. The district is located in South East Modesto and serves a TK-8 student population of 3,050.

Within the boundaries the Empire Union School District is the community of Empire. As well as Johansen High School which is part of the Modesto City Schools District.
