George Frideric Handel
1685 - 1759

Listen to Alla Hornpipe from Handel's Water Music Suite.

George Frideric Handel was born in 1685 in Halle, Germany.  He lived during the Baroque period.  He died in 1759.  His life was long and productive.  He grew up under the watchful eye of his parents.  His father did not want him to be a musician, but his mother encouraged her son's gifts.

Handel became one of the greatest composers of all time.  He traveled widely and learned many things about music.  Handel moved to England and remained the rest of his life.  He became a British subject in 1727.

Handel wrote in many musical forms, including chamber music, vocal and choral works, pieces for the harpsichord, and concertos.  His most famous work is the "Messiah."

Famous composers who also lived during the Baroque period include J.S. Bach and Antonio Vivaldi.  Click on their names to learn more about them.
